Transforming Lives

The University of Miami is among the top research universities and academic medical centers in the nation, and one of the largest private employers in South Florida.

With more than 16,000 faculty and staff, the University strives for excellence, and is driven by a powerful mission to transform and impact the lives of its students, patients, members of the community, and people across the globe.

The University is committed to fostering a culture of belonging, where everyone feels valued and has the opportunity to add value. Through values of Diversity, Integrity, Responsibility, Excellence, Compassion, Creativity, and Teamwork (DIRECCT) the U community works together to create an environment driven by purpose, excellence, community, and service.

This is a 9-month non-tenure track appointment. Candidates must have a J.D. degree from an accredited law school, excellent writing and analytical skills, and outstanding academic credentials. Preferred qualifications include prior teaching experience and experience in law practice or judicial clerkships; demonstrated legal writing and research expertise; strong interpersonal skills; a long-term commitment to teaching legal writing; and the ability to contribute through teaching and service to the diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community.

Miami Law created the Legal Communication and Research Skills program, or "LComm," in 2010. In the J.D. program, all students take LComm I and LComm II as a required two-credit course in the fall and spring semesters, respectively, during the first year of law school. In addition, our international LL.M. students take LComm I, and some LL.M. programs require LComm II. The courses introduce students to skills that are the foundation of successful lawyering: creating efficient research designs, conducting sophisticated legal analyses, drafting legal documents geared to the reality of practice, and becoming effective communicators. The courses use an intensive hands-on approach, with detailed individualized feedback, in-class activities, one-on-one conferences with professors, and other learning tools. LComm culminates in the spring semester with appellate briefs and oral arguments before practioners and judges in the community. Each LComm faculty member teaches two sections of approximately 20 students.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

Applications should be submitted using the University of Miami online portal. Questions can be emailed to Jill Barton, Director of Legal Writing, at jbarton@law.miami.edu.

The position will remain opened until filled, but to receive full consideration, applications should be received by April 1, 2022. We anticipate conducting interviews for the position from April to May 2022 with an anticipated start date of July or August 2022.
