HOW A MENTAL HEALTH TRAGEDY CAN HELP SAVE OTHERS IN YOUR BACKYARD (1195 hits)

Greetings Friends,

The Tucson, Arizona tragedy has been on the tongues and minds of the nation over the past week. The tragedy has indeed caused conversations regarding mental illnesses to move forward as it typically does on the heals of a tragedy such as this. The message is still the same: undiagnosed and untreated mental illnesses can lead to tragic consequences. This includes suicide and homicide.

It is important to understand that most persons with a mental illness do not commit violent acts. Persons who are under treatment and/or take medications as prescribe do not become violent. The violent acts that make the news headlines involve the more extreme and/or serious untreated mental illness. There are more acts of violence committed against people that do not make the headlines every day such as with homeless persons, domestic violence, child abuse, suicide, etc., but we have a greater understand ing of reality when it makes the news and lives are lost needlessly as well.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (Visit SAMSHA at www.samsha.gov), more persons with an untreated mental illness will die prematurely from other diseases (i.e., heart disease, cancer, diabetes, etc.) than those who commit violent acts.

What is a mental illness?

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (Visit NAMI at www.nami.org), it is any brain disorder such as Chronic Depression, Bipolar, ADHD, ADD, OCD, PTSD, Anxiety/Panic Disorders, Schizophrenia, and a multitude of other mental illness.

A brain disorder is a chemical imbalance in the brain. There is no cure for brain disorders. There is effective treatment of all brain disorders that will allow persons diagnosed with a mental health condition to live a quality of life the same way any other physical health condition can do so (i.e., diabetes, AIDS/HIV, Hypertension, etc.). The key to living a quality of life is to seek treatment and education.

Some of the typical symptoms of Depression include lack of concentration, lack of energy, sudden loss of appetite or sudden increase in appetite, interruption of your normal sleep routine, excessive worry, very low self-esteem, unexplained aches and pains, alcohol/drug abuse, s*xual promiscuity, intense periods of sadness, hopelessness, denial anything is wrong, lack of interest in s*x, and suicide thoughts.

Some of the typical symptoms of Bipolar include mood swings, racing thoughts, grandiose thoughts (for example, you believe you are Oprah), Depression, inability to sleep, risky behavior (driving at excessive speeds for fun), poor judgment (understanding consequences of driving at excessive speed), alcohol/drug abuse, reckless behaviors, low self esteem, and denial anything is wrong.

When a person is struggling with several of these symptoms at one time and the symptoms last longer than two weeks and are persistent, that person should see a doctor. Visiting a doctor is the only wayt to determine if a chemical imbalance exist and what course of treatment is necessary. Visiting a doctor does not always mean the person has to take medication, or seek counseling. However, only a doctor can make that determination. Taking medication and/or seeing a doctor can be short term or long term. Each person is different so treatment will vary.

The most important part of treatment is education! This is learning as much as you can about the diagnosis and treatment and coping and managing your life with the diagnosis. Then we teach other family members so that the next generation can also live a quality of life.

THIS TRAGEDY OFFERS AN OPPORTUNITY.

Please join NAMI in contacting Legislators and urging them to stop, STOP the budget cuts to mental health services in an effort to prevent future trageds. NAMI raises awareness, education, coping and management strategies, and outreach to community and agencies.

The bigger issue is the wake of unemployment and people now being uninsured even if they want treatment ---where is the money? Even before the recession and joblessness, health coverage hardly even covered psychiatric care. Hopefully this will change.

Recently (last week) in Toronto, Ontario (Canada) a homeless man and also probably suffering from some type of mentally illness, mowed down a police officer with a snow plow, killing the officer. Perhaps we need to be talking about making medications affordable as well as with the Health Care Reform.

In Canada there is Universal Health Care, but the drugs (although not as expensive as her in the States) still cost and when one has no income to pay for them--- the consequences are too, costly to count because innocent lives may be lost. Sgt Ryan Russel left behind not only a young widow, but a two year old son.

The Late Sgt Russel was 35.

yes, Sis.,

it's all in the Affordable Care Act, but the media is not wanting to be fair in this game. Accessibility to mental healthcare is one of the benefits to having Affordable healthcare once the pre-existing barrier comes down. However, if there is no healthcare reform, it's business as usual.

No law is going to solve all of society's ills, but for the massess, it works. If the drug companies did not voluntarily make prescriptions affordable for years and years, they are definitely NOT going to start on their own now. Greed has driven America's health costs through the roof. Then mix in the fact that people still don't want to really talk about mental illness so it's a mighty mountain to chip at.

Passing some love,

@ Brother Mo,
Canada has safe medication and probably even safer than the States. No one can stop Americans from getting medications from Canada. We have to start lokking out for ourselves like some of our Congressmen and women are looking out for themselves instead of us. www.medicationscanada.com
