Hey Family,
I will not rest until the statistics on illiteracy in the African-American community turn upside down!!! After I listened to the interview by Ella Curry of EDC Creations of Dr. Maya Angelou, I just quieted my mind and reflected on what Dr. Angelou said. No doubt, I was excited for Sis. Ella to have spent time up close and personal with Dr. Angelou, but that was not what kept rejuvenating in my spirit.
It's been a couple years since I purchased my last book by Dr. Angelou and if we have read only one, we know Dr. Angelou is a very wise, anointed woman. My first thought was, I will read some of her work today. Then a profound thought entered my mind as I tried to decide which title.
Dr. Angelou's words dug deeper and deeper. She explained to Sis. Ella that she has just one son, but thousands of daughters. I thought about something else that got my attention. Dr. Angelou also explained that she had a lot of time in her past, but she does not have a lot of time in "my future." Uhmm....
Then I settled on this thought: Dr. Angelou has lived even longer than the last time I purchased and read one of her books. She has even more wisdom to share. I also may not have a lot of time in my future. I need to learn even more from this Spiritual Mother. ....
Illiteracy does not just mean not being able to read a word or spell it. It includes expanding the mind to learn and educate oneself. That is how we grow wiser. That is why we need to make our children read.
We live in a global world that does not care if we are successful or not. We are being passed by at an alarming rate of speed. So, let's get down to reading more and remember, our children (daughters) mimic our behaviors and they are our future!!!!!! If we don't read and introduce them to reading at an early age, we cannot blame anybody but ourselves when they fail in school and cannot pass standardized test. Of course, these tools determine who goes to college, how much money they receive in college, and if they will succeed in the workplace that counts.....let's get reading.
Dr. Maya Angelou has penned this book to share her wisdom and experiences to every African-American female and sisters of every ethnic background around the world. I am on my way to get this book because of one more profound thing Dr. Angelou said and that is why we should be kinder to our children. Although she spoke directly to Sis. Ella about this, the message hit home. I will let you experience the interview and I hope you blog with me on what your deep, deep insight is. I want to know before you read the book, "Letter To My Daughters" from just listening to the interview and then buy the book, so that we can discuss it afterwards. Won't you please join me?
Lastly, as mostly Authors, we know it takes quite a commitment to a specific cause to spend time writing, publishing, promoting, and selling. It is verrrrry costly. I mention that because Dr. Angelou can write about ANYthing and spend her money ANYway she wants to. She can not write ANYmore and her legendary place in history will not be altered. However, she made a choice to write this book, "Letter To My Daughters." She made a choice to tell "us" these matters from the heart. At 80+ years old, she is blessed to be able to love us that much. I'm loving her back...
